Everyone starts at 1000.
Every new player begins at 1000 Elo (30K), whether they enter a beginner event or a Dan promotion group. Registration category never changes a starting rating.
Your Elo tracks how you play. Your MWA certification records what you have achieved.

An administrator verifies the MWA certificate and its issue date. On that date, the rating is set to the configured value for the certified rank. Later games are recalculated from that point.
A certified 1D player remains listed as MWA 1D even if their current Elo falls to the 1K or 5K band. Tournament results never change a certificate.
Games from Rated, non-draft tournaments count from the event date and use each player's status-based K value and a 400-point expectation scale. Wins score 1, draws ½, losses 0. Byes, unknown outcomes and void games do not affect ratings.
Expected score = 1 / (1 + 10(opponent Elo − your Elo) / 400)
New Elo = floor(current Elo + K × (result − expected score))
Two new players at 1000 use K=40: the winner reaches 1020 and the loser 980. Each player's calculation uses both pre-game ratings and their own K value. The final rating is rounded down to a whole point, so the two changes need not sum to zero.
Only eligible rated games count towards status. K is determined before each game; the new status applies to the next game. Certificates are applied before games on the same date, then games are processed in round order. Corrections rebuild subsequent ratings.
| Status | Group | Eligible games | K |
|---|---|---|---|
| New | Provisional | 0–9 | 40 |
| Initial | Provisional | 10–29 | 30 |
| Establish | Established | 30–49 | 20 |
| Stable | Established | 50+ | 10 |
Win rate is wins divided by eligible games. Draws count as games but not wins. Players without eligible games display a dash.
Verified MWA certification starts a player at least at Establish (K=20), effective from the certificate date. Actual game counts remain unchanged. At 50 eligible games the player becomes Stable (K=10).
The certified rank and current rating band may be different.
